Shanggar Kuppusamy

Dr. Shanggar hails from Pulau Pinang. He graduated with an MBBS degree from the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal (MAHE) in the year 1996. Compulsory government service followed under the Ministry of Health, Malaysia with postings at Ipoh General Hospital and Hospital Mentakab, Pahang as a House Officer and Medical Officer respectively. He then joined the Surgical training programme under University of Malaya in the year 2000 and successfully graduated with a Masters in Surgery in 2004. He was then posted to serve as a Clinical Specialist in Surgery at Hospital Temerloh for a year. Dr. Shanggar then decided to pursue his career in Urology by joining University of Malaya as a Clinical Specialist in 2005 and subsequently was offered a slot in the Urological training programme in 2006. He was successful in the Malaysian Urological Board exit exams as well as in obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, UK in the year 2009. Dr. Shanggar is currently a member of the Malaysian Urological Board. He has also won several awards for his research work, which includes the Sanofi-Aventis Prostate Cancer Research Award at the Malaysian Urological conference 2007, Best Poster award at the 20th World Video Urology Congress 2009 and Best Oral Presentation Award at the Malaysian Urological conference 2010. As recognition of his role in researches in the University, both University of Malaya and University of the West of England, Bristol, UK, offered him a combined scholarship to undertake a PhD in prostate cancer genetics in androgen metabolism in the UK. Dr. Shanggar was again successful in the completion of his PhD in the year 2015. His stay in the UK for his PhD coincided with clinical work as a Fellow in Urology at the Bristol Urological Institute. His journey has been instrumental in moulding him into a complete Doctor for his practice as Urological Consultant at the University Malaya Medical Centre. His clinical skills in managing all urological problems ranging from urinary stone disease, men’s health issues like erectile dysfunction, benign prostatic conditions, bladder symptoms to urological cancers and other common urological problems are based on up to date guidelines. Apart from clinical work, he has published artcles in multiple peer-reviewed journals and is a part of various research activities in University of Malaya. He strives to provide the best possible Urological care and service to all members of the public with the excellent facilities and support available from the UMSC team.
